Primary Resources

This section of the website offers a variety of resources in different fields of Hawaiian knowledge, many of which are available online. Descriptions and links are provided where possible, arranged in general fields. This collection is a starting point, and we welcome additions, which can be sent to us at info@awaiaulu.org.

  • A Hawaiian Studies collection of maps and historical resources about land – www.avakonohiki.org

  • Ka Leo Hawaiʻi 1972-1986 offers full audio copies of the Ka Leo Hawaiʻi radio program that was broadcast weekly on KCCN and hosted by the Hui Aloha ʻĀina Tuahine of UH Mānoa, with Larry Kauanoe Lindsey Kimura as the host. Transcripts are available for some of the programs — ulukau.org/kaniaina/

  • Ka Leo Hawaiʻi 1989-2001 offers full audio copies of the Ka Leo Hawaiʻi radio program that aired weekly from 1989 to 2001, hosted by Puakea Nogelmeier, Hauʻoli Akāka, Lolena Nicholas and Tuti Kanahele. Visitors include native speakers of Hawaiian, teachers from the University or immersion schools, and students, and recordings are available for programs from 1991-2000 — Ka Leo Hawaiʻi 1991-2000

  • The Clinton Kanahele Collection offers ecorded interviews with Hawaiian-speaking elders, done in 1970 by Clinton Kanahele — library.byuh.edu/library/archives/kanahele

  • Google Translate – this online program provides rudimentary translation of Hawaiian to English or English to Hawaiian. Computer generated, the program can provide translations of simple text and can be useful as a general tool.
